Seeking Nominations to Attend the 2020 Open Textbook Network Summer Institute - tcassidy - 02-04-2020

The Open Textbook Network’s annual immersive Summer Institute (OTNSI), will be held this year from July 27-31 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  Those trained at the OTN Summer Institute have the opportunity to serve as VIVA System Leaders for VIVA’s statewide OTN program.

As last year, VIVA will fund four individuals to attend this intensive training.  Below are the criteria, responsibilities, and opportunities for those that attend this institute.  Colleges are welcome to nominate your current Campus Leader for this opportunity or any other individual who you feel would excel in this role.  VIVA System Leaders speak highly of the experience and are happy to share their thoughts if there are any questions.

To make a nomination, please send me (tcassidy@vccs.edu) the following by Friday, February 14:
  • A brief paragraph from the nominee's supervisor listing the nominee’s qualifications and alignment with this program.
  • A brief paragraph from the nominee addressing why they want to attend and how the training will add to or aid your institution’s OER initiatives.

Qualifications for System Leaders:
  • Leader (or demonstrated interest) in teaching one or more scholarly communication topics (e.g., IR, OER, copyright, or Open Access) at their institution.  The nominee’s position should in some way align or overlap with OER but is not limited to any specific library function or department.
  • Strong interest in open education initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and implement outreach to faculty and/or librarians.
  • Demonstrated leadership/aptitude in organizing and collaborating regionally and/or nationally.
  • Experience organizing and presenting training workshops.

Responsibilities of System Leaders:
  • System Leaders will share what they learned in the Open & Affordable Course Content Forum and/or via a written update to VIVA OTN Campus Leaders about the Institute.
  • They must be willing to be tapped for regional training and presentation opportunities on the benefits of OER.

Leadership Opportunities for System Leaders:
  • Only those trained as System Leaders are eligible to join the VIVA OTN Coordinating Committee, which coordinates support for the VIVA OTN program; identifies problems; encourages collaboration with OACCC; and identifies opportunities for further development of the  OTN program in Virginia.

Selections will be made by the VIVA Steering Committee no later than March 12th.
