Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is used that much, but I thought I would try to post a question here. Does anyone know the easiest way to batch change holdings records? We have locations in our holdings records and we are moving about 80 books to a new campus library. I understand how I can make a set and change item locations. But for holdings it seems to involve a normalization process? Which if I'm reading the Alma documentation correctly is very onerous!

Thank you for any advice here!

All -

I had created a Cataloging and Processing Manual for DCC in 2019 when Alma was new to us and we had new people.

BUT the MDeditor is really changed and I need to update my processes and provide up to date screen shots.

Especially for the copy cataloging area where we find a record on WorldCat, import it, add holdings, an item and so forth.

I need details for this process and can find NOTHING on the ALMA help pages.

Has anyone already created this?? Or anything else that you want to share? I am really grateful for TCC already sharing their document. I am happy to share mine when updated.

Please contribute if you have something - especially for the import single record process.

Thanks!

All,

I retired from TCC as a cataloging librarian but now work part-time. When I get questions from other staff, I often create a document of "how to" in response. I'm happy to share documents with a few caveats:

-- TCC is a multi-campus college so some of these processes may be a bit different if you are only one campus.
-- I wrote most of these a while ago. I don't think there have been many changes but there may be a few.
-- I've been known to be wrong.

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to help but I only work mornings. I'll do my best but Tara and Emily, in all cases, have a broader view of Alma than I do so they should still be your final authority.

This document is an overview of cataloging here at TCC. OCLC is a magnificent help so don't hesitate to contact them for help.

Have fun and remember, in most cases mistakes are not fatal.

Problem: Items for print materials were added to bib records for an online resource.
Items are for print materials, portfolios are for electronic resources. Electronic titles should never have items with barcodes. Here's how to fix this problem by editing your import profile.
Also, I often see OCLC records for online resources overwrite the records for the print editions. You can report that error to OCLC and they'll put the print on a print record and the online on an online record.
