Hi everyone,

I'm doing a presentation on OER at the VCCA annual conference next month. I'm going to talk about what OER is and how it's being used at VCCS colleges. I know the shared VCCS and VIVA resources, but I'd like to get a better idea of what individual colleges are doing. I've checked out the college websites, but many of them don't go into much detail.

Is there something really great your college is doing? What kind of courses now use OER? HAve you had an open textbook workshop? How about a VIVA Open Grant winner?

"Dear Colleagues,

VIVA awarded six VIVA Open Course Grants in its spring, 2022 round of funding. VIVA Open Course Grants award funds to innovative, collaborative efforts to bring free course resources to students at higher education institutions in the state of Virginia in order to reduce costs, improve student performance, and facilitate creative approaches to pedagogical goals. Funded by the General Assembly and sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education, Open Course Grants are awarded in amounts from $2,000-$30,000 to teams and individuals adopting, adapting, and creating open content.

The spring 2022 grants totaled $127,145 in awards to projects doing work at nine institutions throughout the state in six different disciplines. The awarded projects will create more than $1.4 million in cost avoidance over the next five years and impact as many as 15,000 students. Those students will be found in nine different institutions across Virginia, from classes in required, introductory classrooms to medical school campuses. The awarded projects are:

• A multidisciplinary, collaborative project in Spanish for Medical Education headed by Dr. Diana Galarreta-Aima at James Madison University that brings together medical Spanish educators, a professional medical interpreter, the JMU School of Nursing Simulation and Clinical Laboratories, and the JMU Libraries Media Production Services department. The team, which also includes faculty from the University of Virginia, William & Mary, and Eastern Virginia Medical School, will create an interactive text, downloadable exercises, and seven videos that feature common medical scenarios with Spanish-speaking patients and medical interpreters.

• Dr. Matthew Powlowicz and a team of anthropology instructors at Virginia Commonwealth University will adapt and create an introductory anthropology text that will provide full coverage of each of the four subfields of anthropology—biological anthropology, archaeological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. In will include diverse perspectives and case studies to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion objectives and better represent where anthropology is as a discipline.

• Tonya Howe at Marymount University and John O’Brien at the University of Virginia will build on work begun on a previously awarded NEH grant, which funded the development of a digital literature anthology from which faculty can generate individually-themed coursepacks. In their continuing work, they will develop nine student editions of materials focused on the decolonized survey of English literature. These student editions will include headnotes, annotations, and facsimile page images, will incorporate frequently-taught texts, and create a framework for the decolonial survey of English literature.

• Intending to globalize and modernize the typical, expensive Art History textbooks required of many first year students, Paula Winn will lead a team at Brightpoint Community College and Northern Virginia Community College that will create a new introductory Art History text. Using openly-licensed materials, public use images, and Smarthistory, the new text which will impact as many as 1100 students in the first year alone. Lecture notes, testing materials, study guides, and PowerPoints will also be compiled for instructors.

• Alexander Bohn, Kyle Gipson, and Kumnit Nong at Northern Virginia Community College and James Madison University will develop open course materials with the potential to be used for students throughout physical science and engineering degree course requirements. The project will include (1) specifications for projects mapped to mathematics, physical science, and engineering course objectives, (2) development of videos intended to aid students during project work, (3) an interdisciplinary text that would replace materials being used in calculus, physics, and engineering courses, (4) the development of an introductory course for engineering and physical science degree programs, and (5) integration of student contributions to the text and course materials.

• At the University of Mary Washington, Janine Davis will lead a project to address the need for open course materials in the UMW College of Education’s required class in Instructional Design and Assessment. The team will create a new textbook that will center evidence-based best practices for classroom instruction and assessment and include recommendations from practicing teachers as well as teacher educators. Videos, case studies, digital learning tools and simulations will be included, as will ancillary materials for instructor use.

Award amounts and anticipated student impact can be found on VIVA’s website here: https://vivalib.org/va/open/grants/spring2022.
Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce that our Request for Proposals for the next round of VIVA Open Course Grants (formerly Course Redesign Grants) is officially open! Applications are due February 23, 2021, and award notification will take place on May 14, 2020.

VIVA Open Course Grants are designed to empower Virginia faculty with the resources and time they need to design or update courses to include open, no cost, or library materials. Open Course Grant recipients are awarded $2,000 - $30,000 to adopt, adapt, or create a resource and pilot them in a course by spring, 2024. The recipients of the 2020 Open Adopt Grants—$2,000 honoraria to adopt a pre-existing resource—were notified yesterday, and those who did not receive funding were encouraged to revise their application and apply for an Open Course Grant.

Faculty members at any VIVA institution, full or part-time, may apply. Proposals may involve one person or teams that include: teaching faculty, librarians, instructional designers, subject matter experts, editors, graphic designers, or others as needed. Multi-institutional teams are particularly encouraged.
More information, including the full Request for Proposals and application instructions are available at https://vivalib.org/va/open/grants/course. A list of past grant recipients can also be found on that page.
• Impact on educational equity and outcomes in traditionally underserved communities
• Preference for statewide reach through multi-institutional efforts
• Commitment to contnue offering the course for future years
In our talk, we will showcase the ESL Composition II Handbook that we have been developing for ESL 41 at the NOVA Loudoun Campus. We are going to pilot the Handbook in the Fall semester; on October 23, we will be able to present both the instructor and the students' feedback to the Handbook and provide insights into the development of OER. We hope that our work will encourage our fellow faculty to embrace, adapt and create OER to reduce the cost for students and to improve the quality of education by making it more personalized and adaptive.
Open access practices can be a cornerstone of undergraduate research training to encourage best practices with data and research reproducibility. Our research lab utilizes platforms such as GitHub and the Open Science Framework (OSF) consistently and with a structure to train and promote research outcomes and products. In using these tools and introducing them to students early, we are promoting a culture of research training and reproducibility in our students, while also documenting and providing all workflows and tutorials that our students utilize in an open way. This approach provides a digital footprint of student work, strengthening their portfolio and recognition in the field, and making our research and training more transparent. This talk will discuss the creation and organization of a research lab centered OSF and GitHub page and how it is used by students and researchers.

VIVA is pleased to announce a new grant initiative, VIVA Open Adopt Grants. VIVA Open Adopt Grants provide awards of $2,000 to individual instructors to support the time it takes to integrate existing open or no-cost materials into a syllabus, and to ensure that the results of those efforts are widely available to Virginia educators.

Though united in purpose with VIVA’s Open Course Grant program, VIVA Open Adopt Grants have a simplified application process, a pre-determined award amount, and will be awarded to individual faculty members hoping to adopt an already existing resource. Team and departmental adoptions, as well as projects seeking to adapt or create new Open Educational Resources, should apply for the larger scale VIVA Open Course grants, the next round of which will be announced in December, 2020. The VIVA Open Adopt Grant RFP and application can be found on the VIVA website. Applications are due October 19, 2020.

Hi All,

The redesign grant applications are due on February 28th, and I haven't gotten a lot of faculty interest this time around. Plus, we also all know that VIVA prefers collaborative, cross-institutional collaborations. Do you have faculty that are thinking of applying, but would have a more viable application if they had someone from a different institution go in with them? Let me know. I can try to persuade faculty in the comparable discipline here to consider a collaborative application.

Big news from VIVA:
-------------------------------
Dear colleagues,

VIVA is thrilled to announce the launch of VIVA Open, an OER Commons website designed to support the open education efforts of Virginia faculty and higher education professionals:
https://vivaopen.oercommons.org/

VIVA Open will serve as a repository for VIVA Course Redesign Grant projects, and the Spring 2019 Cohort will be the first to populate the site with Virginia created and adopted open educational resources (OER). In addition to serving as a repository, VIVA Open supports the creation and adaptation of new OER, lesson plans, and courses through the resource and module builder tools. VIVA Open also contains VIVA Open Collaborations Hub – an online space to facilitate group collaboration and material discovery. Additionally, VIVA Open Curated Collections provides a listing of existing OER that serve a variety of disciplines.

VIVA Open is freely accessible to all, and users may register an account to create and submit resources, join groups, and save items found and/or evaluated within the collections. Future VIVA Open projects include a Course Mapping Hub that will provide a listing of OER suitable for high enrollment and Transfer Virginia courses. We’ll continue to update you as the site is populated with materials and as new trainings and tools are made available. We encourage you to explore what VIVA Open has to offer, and look forward to your feedback on this new resource. To get you started, please join the OER Champions group and share a link to your favorite OER. Lastly, please distribute this announcement widely to your networks!
