Dear Colleagues,
VIVA committee participation is an outstanding opportunity for professional development and networking with peers across the VIVA community, and I strongly encourage anyone who is interested to volunteer.

Opportunities for representatives from 2-year institutions are llsted below. I ask that you contact me directly to nominate yourself or one of your library staff for a standing VIVA committee appointment. VCCS nominations and appointments are done centrally through the System Office. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or to express interest.

To reiterate Anne’s closing below, “…self-nominations are welcome [and] should have the advance approval of their library dean or director for participation on the committee, should they be selected. VIVA strongly encourages the nomination of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to diversity in race, ethnicity, culture, age, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, geographic location, and career stage.”
Subject: Call for nominations for seats on VIVA Committees, due 11/11/22

Dear Colleagues –

Due to a governance change (JMU and Radford are now doctoral institutions) and other factors, VIVA now has a number of seats open on its standing committees. The pattern of in-person meetings is given for each committee, as some meet in-person more often than others, but all meetings have virtual options and VIVA reimburses for meeting travel. <>

Open & Affordable Course Content Committee: One Public Doctoral, three Public Four Year, one Public Two Year, and one Private seat are available. This committee, chaired by Steve Litherland at TCC, recommends to the Steering Committee policies and/or operations related to the adoption and development of open and affordable course content and promotes the adoption of open and affordable content to VIVA member libraries. Experience and expertise in the areas of OER, reference, instruction, liaison work, publishing, educational technology, student success, and scholarly communication are particularly helpful to this committee. The committee typically meets in-person four times per year, and meetings are typically four hours in length.

Outreach Committee: Two Public Four Year, two Public Two Year, and one Private seat are available. This committee, chaired by Lisa Broughman at Randolph College, promotes and publicizes VIVA and its resources. Experience and expertise in the areas of marketing, communications, event management, graphic design, and outreach are particularly helpful to this committee. The committee typically meets four times per year, with one or two meetings in-person, and meetings are typically three to four hours in length, depending on the format.

Resource Sharing Committee: Two Public Four Year, two Public Two Year, and one Private seat are available. This committee, chaired by Ruth Castillo at Emory & Henry College, develops and recommends to the Steering Committee policies and/or operations related to borrowing, copying, or archiving of individually owned resources at VIVA schools and promotes resource sharing among the VIVA members. Experience and expertise in the areas of interlibrary loan, access services, and faculty support are particularly helpful to this committee. The committee typically meets four times per year, with one or two meetings in-person, and meetings are typically three to four hours in length, depending on the format.

ILL Community Forum Planning Committee: Two Members from Any Type. This committee plans the annual ILL Community Forum. Experience and expertise in the areas of interlibrary loan, access services, faculty support, and event management are particularly helpful to this committee. The committee typically meets once in the fall to review the evaluations from the past forum and then two to three times in the spring to put a call out for presenters and build the agenda for the event. One of the spring meetings is typically in-person, and meetings are typically one to two hours in length, depending on the format. Members of the committee also often help staff the event, such as by serving as moderators or staffing the registration table.

"My name is Peggy Manuelito from Tidewater Community College. I am the MAL and liaison for the Learning Resources Commission for the VCCA. We are excited about your interest in the Learning Resources and hope we can work together to get this commission active again. Ms. Susan Simmers has sent you information regarding all aspects of the LR commission.

As you know we are in the process of planning our annual in-person conference (finally after Covid). Each commission holds their meeting at the conference since Covid, we are trying to recuperate from the loss of colleagues. These colleagues were very active in the LR commission and had officers. Now, we are trying to get things moving again. The VCCA is taking applications for concurrent session presenters and a program for the meeting at the conference. If you have any ideas, concerns, or suggestions regarding the commission, please let me know.

Let’s work together and help the VCCA establish this commission to where it used to be. Also, if you have colleagues that could help us in our endeavors, please forward my information.
Once again thank you for your interest in the LR commission,
