In reviewing one follow up question I noticed that the non-VCCS librarian had requested the user's username and password. I touched base with Quality Control about that issue and got an explanation that essentially noted "Librarians may ask patrons for patron's library card/barcode number and PIN/password during a chat session if this will assist in providing good service to the patron." This came out complaints from some libraries that the chat librarians were either asking or not asking for the confidential information to better assist chat patrons.
QP Quality Control also has a Patron Privacy statement that also addresses how the chat librarians should conduct themselves when this patron usernames/passwords are asked for and received. It may be found at Patron Privacy, section 4.6 of the Policies: http://wiki.questionpoint.org/w/page/138...ronprivacy.
Please also note that if any VCCS college library system wishes to not have a chat librarian ask for the patron username and password, an alert should be posted on their Policy Page in the Alerts section and in the Library Card Policies section.
NOVA will be asking that patron usernames and passwords not be requested.
