All & Tara -
So, I would like to get some big round numbers of what we "own" or have access to. For instance, for promotional material or information that our new VP for Academics wants to know, how many e-journal titles do we have access to?
Anyone able to pull together a report like this? Where can I go to find aggregate numbers?
And, it would be really great to get some kind of breakdown. By subject area covered.
Example:
Total number of e-journal titles: xxxxx
Number of e-journal titles in: Biology, Nursing, Medicine =
Social Sciences =
Education =
Computer Sciences =
Chemistry / Physics =
Etc.
Also, it would be great to get these kinds of numbers for ebooks and videos. (BTW, can we get this for our PHYSICAL materials? Out of Alma maybe?)
Suggestions? Has someone figured this out and can share?
Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,
Some of this data was provided through the IPEDS spreadsheet. Chris Ford at DCC has access to it in Google Drive, so he could share the files with you. Briefly:
Total shared VIVA/VCCS ejournal titles: 73,508
Total shared VIVA/VCCS + DCC Netlibrary ebook titles: 347,875
Total shared VIVA/VCCS e-media titles (includes Overdrive): 48,557
Consider these numbers accurate as of last fiscal year. They do not include recent acquisitions like AVON, Docuseek2, SAGE, etc.
Physical material counts do require running reports out of Alma. We did write up instructions for that as part of the IPEDS data process - Chris should have those.
The subject breakdown of e-journal titles is more complicated (and not part of the IPEDS reporting). To do that, you must rely on the metadata in the journal records which is going to be spotty. I had to do something like this for the Nursing accreditation process at PVCC - they wanted a count of the number of journals in the nursing subject area. Here's what I did:
1. Do an Advanced Search in the Network Zone like so. (Obviously, change the "available for" to Danville CC).
You'll note that I ran it across "Subjects LC contains keywords = nurs* to get all forms of nursing.
I'm open to other suggestions on this one. I got a number that seemed reasonable, but I don't know that it was 100% accurate.

Jacqueline,
This is a good start. As to the IPEDS data, where is that pulled from? Just curious. I do have access to some of that, but I really want a better breakdown for the "media" items because Overdrive really consists of audio books and I just want a number for videos. (and including the newest stuff would be cool) Can I get a latest output of that data?
Thanks though for the actual numbers for DCC! That is awesome. :-)
I will have to try the Advanced Search in Alma. I don't think I have ever played with that. (Do I have access?)
If anyone has any other thoughts or ideas, please share!
Thanks!

All -
Ok. When I ran that same search - changing the scope to DCC - I only got ONE title returned. Weird.
Also, when you search the LC subjects, is that the real LCSH? If so, are LCSH assigned to each journal listing?? I am suspicious. Maybe I should try keyword instead?
Really concerned that I only got one title back for my search.
Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,
The shared IPEDS data is pulled from Alma Analytics. Erin, Jacque, and I created several reports to pull them. To answer your question about the videos: Overdrive is only 1667. So subtract that from the total, and it's 46,890. That number includes American History in Video, Films on Demand, and a few videos from Opposing Viewpoints and Gale in Context: Science.
And yes, as I said, the subject search is suspect. It all depends on whether that information is included in the journal record (which is dependent on whether the vendor included that information when they provided the record to Ex Libris). You will need to play around with the advanced search options until you get a number that feels accurate to you. The Subjects (LC) search is really looking for LCSH. If it doesn't have that, then it won't show up. You could try keyword or look through the other advanced search options. Maybe another field would give you better results.
Also, make sure you are in the Network Zone and not DCC's Institution Zone. Most of the journal records will be there.
And please share what works best for you! I know others need to run this kind of search periodically.

Well, I can do an advanced search in Primo and get a better result... interesting. I think I will go with that for now.

That's a good idea! I know Primo has those subject options + resource type options. That might be the easiest way to go!
