VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - tcassidy - 01-28-2019 VIVA has started a new subscription for the EBSCO Faculty Portal, branded as the VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal. Please see below for more details. VIVA PRODUCT CHANGE: VIVA has a new, shared VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal. The Portal is a catalog designed to assist Virginia public college and university faculty in finding and selecting open and affordable textbooks for their courses in one place. It contains over 200,000 titles from VIVA’s shared library collections, open access textbooks, and ebooks available for VIVA to purchase on behalf of public colleges and universities throughout the state. More information is available here. INSTITUTIONS AFFECTED: All public institutions. (There are discounts available for private institutions; these would be local installations.) COSTS: The public institution subscription is covered by VIVA Central Funds. VIVA will also cover the cost of DRM-free textbooks selected by public institution faculty for their courses. These textbooks will be held locally by the individual institutions. DISCOVERY AND ACCESS: There are two links to the VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal – one that can be shared widely: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=guest&custid=s1135771&groupid=facportal and one that is protected and only for faculty access, as it contains full preview links to the EBSCO ebook content. The protected link, along with sample promotional language and search box code, will be distributed to VIVA’s public institution directors, collection development, and Open Textbook Network contacts. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO: Please promote this product to your faculty and encourage them to report adoptions! If a faculty member requests a textbook for purchase, your institution’s VIVA collection development contact will receive an emailed copy of the request. The VIVA Central Office will work with institutions to ensure that the faculty member is valid and the book is not already held at your institution, and to facilitate access if a purchase is appropriate. RE: VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - DanReam - 02-01-2019 Hi Tara- Thanks for sharing this. i'm puzzled though that the two different links seem to lead to the same result. the public link of http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?a...=facportal takes me to a search tool. When I search "biology" the results all contain a link access to full-text and a link to the adoption form, just like the faculty-only link does. Have you compared these links and found a difference in the results? Thanks. -Dan RE: VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - tcassidy - 02-01-2019 Good question, because it's not immediately apparent! The only difference between the two portals pertains to EBSCO content. Only by using the secured portal link can faculty get access to a full preview of EBSCO ebooks available for purchase. See 'Advanced Search' - Limit your results - 'Ebooks Available for VIVA Purchase' to locate this type of material. In both the open and secure portals, currently owned VIVA ebooks display the same way. Only the secure portal will provide a full preview of an EBSCO book VIVA does not currently own. For example, compare a VIVA-owned and VIVA not-owned title in each portal: Open portal: VIVA currently owned title: Systems biology / Nielsen and Hohmann Access this eBook through your institution / Adopt this book for your course v. Currently Not Owned: Systems Biology / Rajewsky Login to Preview this Book / Request a purchase of this item from your library - No access Secure Portal: VIVA currently owned title: Systems biology / Nielsen and Hohmann Access this eBook through your institution / Adopt this book for your course - displays the same way as in the open portal, since we already own it. v. Currently Not Owned: Systems Biology / Rajewsky Preview this Book / Request a purchase of this item from your library - instead of login prompt, offers faculty a secure preview of full text content Does this clarify? -Tara RE: VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - tcassidy - 06-07-2023 As a reminder, VCCS centrally manages secure faculty access to the portal in an effort to simplify your outreach efforts. Instead of offering two (one secure, one non-secure) links to this resource, please use: https://login.ezproxy.vccs.edu/loggedin/staff/vivatext.html Many thanks to Emily Altman for keeping this updated with the most recent changes from Ebsco. RE: VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - mhanlin - 06-08-2023 This link is not working for us at TCC. We get: "Library resources are available to current VCCS students and staff. Our records indicate that you are not currently affiliated with the VCCS. If you believe you are receiving this message in error, contact Ask a Librarian for assistance." I've tried it both with and without our TCC proxy. Have other schools been able to get it to work? RE: VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal now available - tcassidy - 06-08-2023 I have not heard from any other colleges so far. The link should work for all, as-is: <https://login.ezproxy.vccs.edu/loggedin/staff/vivatext.html> There is no need to customize or remove the proxy info already in the link. |
