OER and Bookstores
#1
We have an interesting situation here at BRCC and just checking if my fellow librarians had already developed a process or were aware of a process.

The lab manual used by our BIO 141 (Anatomy and Physiology) dept. is customized. Our faculty wrote the text and have included some of the figures/pictures. Others are from the present textbook published by McGraw-Hill. We have an agreement with McGraw-Hill for them to "publish" this lab manual and for the Follett bookstore to sell it.

We are considering getting rid of McGraw-Hill and utilizing open-source, Creative Commons images in place of the present McGraw-Hill content and printing the lab manuals utilziing BRCC resources, selling the books at cost (about $13) to the students. I have three primary questions:

1) This lab manual is much like a coursepack for other classes (like History). How has your institution verified or vetted copyright for images/text prior to publication? How have course packs been created and what is the markup, if any, by the bookstore for items printed in house? Or has that requirement not been enforced?

2) Has anyone used the IncludEd program for a coursepack or print material?

3) Is anyone aware of items that are printed on-campus and sold to students, even for a profit?

Note: Digital is not an option for this because there is specific writing involved in the manual. Thus, a print/physical copy is necessary.

Any thoughts or commentary would be helpful either through LincSite or off-line as well.
