FOD Career & Technical Collection -- cancellation
#1
VIVA recently acquired the Films on Demand Master Academic Collection for allĀ  public institutions. The acquisition of this product reduces cost for the system while simultaneously providing access to all colleges.

VIVA's subscription does not include the Career & Technical (C&T) Collection, however, which was subscribed to by the VCCS. Due to the transition of this product to VIVA, the Shared Collections Committee (SCC) took the opportunity to analyze our subscription to the C&T Collection. After looking at price, usage statistics, titles, and copyright dates, the SCC recommended that we cancel the C&T subscription at the VCCS level. The recommendation was brought to the VCCS Library Leadership Steering Committee for approval, and they unanimously voted to cancel the collection.

The VCCS subscription to the Career & Technical Collection expires in April and will not be renewed. Individual colleges may choose to subscribe locally, but the VIVA contract does not include discounts for additional products.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Tara, please correct me if I am wrong, but it the SO didn't actually pay any of the bill for FOD did you? It was my understanding that the SO just did the acquisitions/renewal piece for the schools that choose to subscribe and then we repaid you in our enterprise bill.

So, my understanding of Crystal's message is that any school that currently subscribes and wants to continue this piece of FOD will need to go back to doing their own subscription management and will also lose the discount we received by doing the central purchasing. is that correct? j

Additional Information on the Master Career & Technical Education Collection (MCTEC):

1. According to Melinda Gallo, our InfoBase rep, TCC's subscription does not expire until 6/30/2019. Since there was only 1 master renewal handled by the SO, I assume that everyone's subscription to MCTEC runs through 6/30.

2. MCTEC consists of 5 smaller collections, each of which is available separately if you find you have a lot of use in one only
----Family & Consumer Science Collection
----Guidance & Counseling Collection
----Careers & Job Search Collection
----Technical Education Collection
----Computer Science & Information Technology Collection

3. It is possible to get usage data by collection, both in the aggregate (total number of views) and by title. Infobase just unveiled a new admin portal this week, and I couldn't get it to give me the right data. Melinda was able to pull it stats that looked better, but there were still some inconsistencies between reports, a few of which were glaring. She said is is just learning it, too, so we may be able to better stats in a few weeks after the new portal has been tweaked.

4.Contact info for our rep is: Melinda Gallo, Digital Media Consultant-Academic Division, mgallo@infobase.com, 800-257-5126, x4270. Now that she knows that the VCCS is not renewing for us, I'm sure the other schools that subscribe will hear from her. Smile

FYI, my preliminary analysis shows that, for Tidewater, less than 10% of the available titles accounts for about 75% of the usage, so I'm going to try to figure out the best way to make those available without subscribing to the entire master collection.
