Master periodical index? Not just full text.
#1
All -

Is there a master index?   Kinda like SFX?   I see that our SFX link is no longer working, and the Linc icon directs everyone back to Primo.   That is great - for finding full text.   But what I want is to ALSO find where something is actually indexed as well.

Is there such a thing for all of our VIVA / VCCS resources??     Dodgy

Primo only shows me when it has full text.   But I would like a separate search (maybe just for staff?) that shows me all of our periodicals, located in all of our resources, even if it is not full text.

Thanks!

Just going to reply to one small piece of your message and my apologies if I am stating stuff you already know. Just didn't want to assume and leave out something important. Pre-Alma we had an LMS (Aleph) and a Link Resolver (SFX). Some of our e-resource, primarily ebooks and streaming media, has bib records in Aleph and could be found when searching just Aleph. While many e-resources can be included in Primo's searching (through the Primo Central Index), the actual links to full text came from either Aleph or SFX.

With Alma, the link resolver is part of the system.  Just as with SFX, everything we can access electronically has to be activated in Alma if we want to be able to get to the full text.  If I remember correctly, you have said that DCC doesn't have any locally subscribed resources, just the shared VIVA and VCCS. Those are all handled at the SO level and get activated in the Network Zone. Everything shared that was in SFX migrated into Alma. Our Primo instances are set up so that only full text e-resources will display initially, but you can get the indexed only sources by Checking the Expand my search box at the bottom of the facet list.

As for your question about a Journal Search that includes everything, whether full text or not, I'll have to defer to Emily, but there are probably two ways something is available, either through some kind of search scope in the journal A-Z list configuration in Primo or by some Analytic. I haven't created any e-inventory analytics yet, but there are a quite a few available in Alma.

Hi Jennifer,
The equivalent would be an Alma search for Electronic portfolios > Institution tab for DCC local / Network tab filtered to Available for My Institution for VCCS-wide resources. SFX is no longer in production and should not be linked anywhere. Please see https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Prim...ls_in_Alma

On the Primo side, there is a dedicated Journal search:https://vcc-dan-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo-explore/jsearch?vid=DCC&lang=en_US

Tara -

Thanks!   I do know about the Journal search feature, but it only searches for the titles that are full text.    Are you saying that inside of Alma there is a way to search for ALL of our journal titles indexed in the e-resources?   Or are you saying that there is a way to turn this feature on?

Jacque -

I figured that SFX was retired, but the function of it I thought was to index all titles, not just full text.    So, it sounds like if the records for ALL the journal titles are not already in Alma, then we cannot discover them in Primo.  Hmmmm...   Since we are at the whim of the SO with regard to the resources we have, can they ALL be put into our instance of Alma?   Is this possible?

What I really want is a full index of all titles in all our databases - with dates of availability, format, and list of indexing source.    Have you all ever had one of those??     I have used Journal Finder - from WT Cox - (when I was at another institution) and it did that for all of our periodicals indexed in electronic databases.  It was nice.

I guess I want a unicorn.   Angel     Let me know if there is one!    Smile

Thanks!

Hi Jennifer, yes, in the staff Alma view, search the repository for Electronic portfolios, then filter by Institution tab for DCC local / by Network tab 'Available for My Institution' for VCCS-wide resources. tc

I use Ulrich's fairly often to determine which databases index the journal title.  It answers a lot of questions for me.   Karen Bowers, Librarian at Germanna.
