Cleaning and Disinfection Protocols: SARS-CoV-2
Disclaimer
The library is not a controlled space and cannot be cleaned and treated to the sterile standard of a healthcare facility or laboratory. By performing these cleaning practices, one should not be held liable for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. These protocols do not replace the safety of social distancing. Personal protective equipment and cleaning cannot and will not always protect from spread of SARS-CoV-2 fomites. While these actions may assist in prevention, they do not guarantee safety for library users or employees.
Cleaning - The act of removing germs, but not killing them or rendering them non transmissible. This may reduce the risk of spread by lowering numbers of infectious agents (CDC, 2020a, Section 2).
Disinfecting - Disinfecting requires an EPA-approved disinfectant (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2020b, p. 2).
Personal Protective Equipment [PPE]
Whenever cleaning or disinfecting an object or surface that may be contaminated, it is necessary to wear gloves. These should be discarded after use, and hands should be washed immediately (CDC, 2020a, Section 5).
Masks are only effective when worn properly. Follow these steps from the World Health Organization [WHO] to maintain safe use:
● Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
● Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
● Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
● Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
● To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water (WHO, 2020, Section 3).
Gloves and gowns are recommended for all cleaning tasks by the CDC where infected persons may be present (2020c, Section 8).
When gowns cannot be worn, long sleeves are recommended.
Cleaning Agents
In the absence of an EPA approved disinfectant, 1/3 of a cup of bleach mixed thoroughly in one gallon of water may be substituted. Additionally, 70% alcohol solutions such as isopropanol will adequately disinfect a surface (CDC, 2020b, p.3; Kampf, 2018). Towels and tissues will need to be readily available for use with these disinfectants.
EPA List N approved disinfectants are the only products approved to be able to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces that may contain viral fomites.
Soft, porous surfaces and paper products can only be sufficiently disinfected by isolation over time or machine washing.
*Do not use canned air. When utilizing spray cleaner, dispense onto tissue or paper towel before wiping down a surface (instead of spraying surface directly) *
